Update on Dad 12-03-08 11:03am EST
Dad's surgery went really well. The Doctors & Rehab folks were happy with his status and they let him go yesterday afternoon.

The bad news is that there were some conflicting directions on medication and he's having some swelling which is causing a bit of pain.

Structurally, the joint is where it's supposed to be. But, there was a lot of trauma to the tissue getting in there and replacing the part of the joint that needed work.

So, please, keep Dad in your prayers for his recovery and healing and Mom, too, as she's trying to take care of him.
pookyOverall, sounds like good news.
whipsmilewell, i hope that the meds situation pans out. Glad that it was a success.
bdocPraying for a thorough recovery.
tommyswifeI hate that he has been in pain! I hope he can recover fast!
mister_cglad everything is ok but I will continue to pray.
stu192I've been looking up stuff on moxibustion. It doesn't seem like anything I couldn't do at home. I called an acupressure place today, but the lady (with horrible, broken English) preferred that I bring my wife in rather than do it at home. Between that and having Amanda do flips in a pool, I'm running out of alternatives that I've found. Maybe a chiropractor would be useful, but we're really roundin the corner here. I think the thing helping me is that Amanda says she's "Ok" about whatever happens. (But I'm always open to suggestions, we still have time!)
runningjakeI'm glad the surgery went well, I hope he has a speedy recovery.
pollymhglad for the successful procedure.
mockinbirdI will be thinking about both of them. It is often as difficult for the caregiver as the patient.
all_gods_childrenI pray he continues to recover. Will be praying for both your Dad and Mom.

The Big 3 12-01-08 12:09am EST
Our #2 turned the big 3 today (30th... i started posting this and I crossed the hour mark). She's a goofball, but I couldn't ask for anyone better than my Rosemary!

Here are some pics to help refresh your memory.

p.s. don't forget my Dad in your prayers as he's going for surgery VERY early Monday.

***************************************************************
UPDATE:
Dad went through surgery wonderfully, everyone was really happy with his progress and he came home today. He's having some pretty extreme pain and swelling so the next couple of days might be rough, so, please, continue to keep him in your prayers!
mandyhayes1Good grief she really looks like Dave in a few of those pictures. Especially the one in the little green dress with white smocking making such a serious face :o)
waerickHappy Birthday Rosie - sorry we were unable to be there!

Prayers for my dad 11-26-08 04:53pm EST
As you're enjoying this time of giving thanks with your loved ones, I'd ask you to keep my Dad, Mark Hastings, in your prayers.

He's having knee replacement surgery on Monday and it's been a long time coming. Not only does he need prayers for that, but they won't let him have the surgery if he even has a fever, so please pray that he remains healthy through the surgery date, too, please.

And, if you're reading this, I want you to know that I'm very thankful that God has blessed me with your friendship and encouragement!
bdocPraying for your Dad.
1cor9_19I will be praying for him, and I will mention him tonight during our prayer service.
curliePraying!
smiley_bethPraying. Is he having both replaced at once or just one?
overtoneHey Ben - I will try to remember to send you a list of my fav Wendell Berry books.
stu192I will pray. Even routine surgeries are still surgeries! Happy Thanksgiving!
hooseI'll be praying for him.
heatheronthehillJack was a very gassy baby for a while there, hence "Jack the Ripper". :)

I'll keep your Dad in my prayers.
71lespaulcustomActually, it was so high because you could not open the trunk otherwise!
lefantstafim not so good at getting all four food groups, ever. so i'll skip the candy corn, probably the syrup, and stick to straight candy canes and sugar.

runningjakePraying!
smiley_bethSo have you been enjoying the warmth of a wood burning stove? How are you liking the whole wood burning chore of life?

And then there were four... 11-25-08 01:55pm EST
Today is the last day for one of my colleagues who is going home to Java for 5 weeks (interestingly, he lived in the same apartment complex that I did at Ohio State and walked in the same graduation ceremony, now, he's probably my best work friend and sits across the aisle).

Tomorrow, though, is the final day with the company with the last of our team who was outsourced. Thankfully, he just found a job last week, so that's a relief. It's going to be weird without the old team.

Oh well, I'm looking forward to thanksgiving with my family and a few days off!

I hope you have a marvelous weekend with your loved ones!
hastingsis his place the one where the weird food smells came from?
madtomkiddNope, someone else.
whipsmilei hate it when my office buddies leave.
marlaMe, too, but I'm thankful that you were able to keep your job, Ben! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, too!

O What a Beautiful Morning! 11-19-08 01:42pm EST
If you read my outstanding wife's recent post, you know we bought 6 more goats. They are, indisputably, meat goats. Well, I took the first one in this morning (along with a runt from the last set we bought).

I was on the road at 5:30 and it was as dark as a night gets. I make the 50 minute drive, drop off the goats and head back. Thanks to the daylight savings (maybe the ONLY benefit), the sun started to rise as I returned home.

After a while, I saw some of the most amazingly beautiful clouds lit with an entire palette of colors and texture so bold... well, I almost had a tear well up and just had to thank God for letting me see such a beautiful sight and for being so awesome to create such things.

I hope you are/have been able to see something truly beautiful in God's creation today!
all_gods_childrenYup! Noah and I marveled at all the rainbows we found in the house from our entry room chandelier when the sun came out! Isn't God Awesome!
smiley_bethThe sun is shining especially bright and beautifully today. I love trees and leaves, and my favorites are fall leaves, but there is a unique beauty in the empty trees. Wayne and I were talking about how different and even bigger the side yard feels when the big tree has emptied its leaves. It feels so open. God has given us something to admire in each season, and day, for that matter.
arsenalEven though retired, why do you think I get up between 4 and 5 every morning. There is just something about being up for the dawn that has fascinated me since my youth.
mattdevoreActually, just yesterday I was marveling as I walked through the arboretum in the midst of a beautiful snowstorm during my lunch break.
heatheronthehillI was sitting in Bible class when a 90+ year old Minnesota farm widow commented that you can only truly appreciate the beauty of God's creation when you wake up at 4 a.m. for the summer sunrise and that the lazy people who slept in until 6 just didn't know what they were missing! :D
runningjakeWe actually had a nice day out today but I wasn't too happy because it was supposed to snow today and it was just cold instead!
marla:) Today the dusk light was just absolutely wonderfully beautiful! There's just a strangely lovely quality about that kind of light. Love it.
ccmomI certainly can't give complete info about making cane sugar, but from what I saw they crush the sugar cane with a big wheel which presses out the cane juice. Once they have 60 gallons of cane juice they put it in a huge pot and boil it. As they do this the impurities come to the top and they can skim them off. They continue to boil until all of the water is boiled out. They are left with about 6 gallons of cane sugar.
waerickI can't remember, is it our turn to come see you or is it your turn to come see us? Either way - we need to make it happen... soon... or whenever you can stop killing goats... or the work of 5 men! It's time for a break.
lefantstafit snowed yesterday. in the night time. and the little bits of light from the porch lights made the snow sparkle, like someone sporatically threw a handful of diamonds in our yard. it was breathtaking. and beautiful.
jayThat is awesome brother. I love watching the sun rise (i see quite a few of them with my schedule). We can't bring ourselves to commit to anything animal wise beyond the cat. You and your goats are inspiring
heatheronthehill
I noticed the note about the cane sugar and thought I'd share some photos of a cane boiling day we shared with her parents and grandparents in FL a few years ago. It was fascinating!
heatheronthehill
oops! sorry I posted that one twice - here is the other picture
dandegarmoCan I slaughter your goats with a bow and arrow? :)
mockinbirdThere is something about the stars on a cold clear night that just fills me with such awe and wonder.
janedoegoats are cute! do they try to eat people's clothes like the ones at the petting zoo?
