Jaime and I recently talked about how to use technology to spread the word and if Christians are utilizing it enough. From that talk we decided to try to post an offer to study the bible on Craigslist. I posted a little something this afternoon and receive two responses already (only 3 hours later). One person asked if I have received many responses because they though it was a good idea (I plan on following up with them and see where it goes) and another asking for info about the Church. So far I think it may be a great avenue to reach some people. I placed the ad under the "free stuff" section.
UPDATE: The ad was just flagged and removed. I see I can not post intangable items so I will repost with an offer of a free bible.
there's a girl here who found a roommate off Craigslist, and that's intangable, so why not bible studies? That's sad that it got moved, it IS a really neat idea.
So far I have posted it 6 times and people keep flagging (removing) it. Only one negitive response so far. I will keep reposting the ad as I see fit. It is amazing how hateful and scared people are of the truth.
That's a great idea Jake. I'm sorry that it keeps getting flagged. I wonder if it's it's the same person each time or if there are more people afraid of it than encouraged by it?
I have done the group thing before and there are a lot of anti bible people on there causing trouble. That area seems like a sounding board for those who are opposed to religion.
It’s over. No more ads, discussions, debates. How cool is that? Even though the one I voted for did not win, I am OK with that. I think (if the fiscal, energy, and other policies pass) we will have some difficult times ahead, but there are also many positives. If, and I hope I am wrong, the economic situation of America turns downward it will help us focus on what really matters. Many have lost sight of how rich we really are. We strive for more and are not satisfied with what God has blessed us with. If things get tight, we might understand what we do have. I know God has a plan for everything, and that should comfort any who are having a hard time with the results (besides, did anyone think McCain was going to win?). That is the positive view we should have as Christians. Don’t get me wrong, I am not wishing bad times on anyone or saying it will happen, but if it does that may just be what we need right now.
There are also some positive political views Conservative can have. The Republicans have lost sight of their “platform” long ago. What have they done in the past 10 years? This should be a wake up call and hopefully the will change what is broken with the party. They have been ignoring their base for long enough and ignored the issues we hold to. I have been disgusted with their spending and lack of getting anything done. They have been growing government as aggressively as anyone. So maybe the will reflect on where they fell and we can get some new blood to bring America back to what the founders envisioned.
It will be an interesting time over the next few years. But no matter what happens, we can know Gods will will be done.
I agree with you. I think our country needs some change and sometimes the only way to do that is through hard times. The old "hit rock bottom" philosophy. The problem for me though is that I don't what the change Obama is talking about. I fele that is in the wrong direction.
If you can find "msshampoo" on here, there's some Disney promo going on soon. If you go to my page and find 'derbydi" and go to her page you can find msshampoo there.
Here are my last thought before the election on Tuesday. I know many have their pet issue which sways their vote for a particular candidate. Some look at the economy and their personal pocket book, others on a "moral" issue, others on who speaks the best. What ever your reason, I would like you to think of a few more things.
Our country was built on freedoms. Slowly government has chipped away at our freedoms and has dictated what we can or can not do. With these slow changes many have not even noticed an impact on their life. I am not suggesting there is going to be any major, earth shattering decisions made with one candidate over another, but rather a slow movement away from the foundation America was built on.
Both as citizens and as Christians we are to be responsible for our actions. Many would believe we should let the government take care of various areas of our lives. The problem is: where does this stop. How long will it be until our faith has limits put on it. I know there is not a government that can stand against our God, but they sure can restrict the ease of worship we now have. As Americans allow government more power we may be sliding closer to a future we would not be willing to accept.
So, with this in mind, I want to talk about things going on now and what they can lead to (especially as a Christian). What concerns me is the way this world is influencing the youth and what that will mean in the future. With the constant drum beat of removing God from public life (schools), teaching children about sex and promoting “safe sex” rather than what God wants (sex for marriage only), evolution vs. the “silly” notion of creation, and homosexual relationships as normal. I’m sure there are many more ungodly issues being taught (indoctrinated) to the youth. These teachings will have a lasting effect on the future of this country. It was not too long ago when it was shameful for an unmarried woman to be pregnant, now they throw showers for her, homosexuals would never feel comfortable parading around this sin, now the “religious fanatical” are the odd ones. People are even suing school districts over “one nation under God”. Our children will already have a hard enough time being godly without this political movement to do away with God. Another generation is being raised to think these, and other, sins are normal and will someday be our Congressmen, Senators, and President. And the things they will pass as law will be based on their life view and how they were raised.
I am not saying there is a candidate(s) who are going to lead us to salvation and correct all the ungodliness. But I am saying there is/are candidate(s) who actively pass lawsuits attempting to restrict our beliefs as hate and discrimination and promote ungodly teaching to the youth. I will not support such a party or individual.
We must look how decisions and leaders today will effect tomorrow not what they can do for our wallets and financial situation today. God expects us to take care of our own families and the brethren/church to pick up any other needs. That is the structure God has set up, it is a personal work to help others. We are also told about those who refuse to work in the bible and what should be done with them (nothing). America is to provides opportunities to everyone, not a paycheck.
I do not look to politicians to be our spiritual leaders, but pray that they will stay out of the way. I am not looking for who is more moral, or who will legislate the bible. However, I don’ t think we want someone who will be active in “kicking against the goads” , and mocking the teachings of God.
We need to be careful what we ask for, because we just might get it.
Very good thoughts Jake! I agree with you on the children and how there just seems to be such a push for these sinful ways to be shoved down their throats as if this is normal and good and right.
In grad school there was a comment made about if parents were held more accountable in raising kids then the problems we have with schools would be solved. My professor commented that unfortunately if a candidate ever mentioned that as their campaign they would not be elected. Very sad but true.....
In regards to your comment, here is a quote from Obama: "And I've said this all across the country when I talk to parents about education, government has to fulfill its obligations to fund education, but parents have to do their job too. We've got to turn off the TV set, we've got to put away the video game, and we have to tell our children that session not a passive activity, you have to be actively engaged in it. If we encourage that attitude and our community is enforcing it, I have no doubt we can compete with anybody in the world."
Boy, were the last two weeks great. I think this may be a longer post for any or all of those interested in the events in my life.
We (my family and some friends) arrived in FL on Wednesday the 15th. Soon after our landing we (Jaime, Kids, and I) rushed over and pick up the rental mini van and make our way over to the Fortune road Church for class and visit the Lungstrums. After that we headed to a hotel for the night before the chaos (in a good way) began.
On Thursday we (10 of us) went over to Downtown Disney to do our shopping and hang out. We (the kids) decided to eat lunch at the new T-Rex restaurant. We later found out this was the first lunch served and they had only opened the night before. With that being said, we had a mixed reaction to our experience. The restaurant its self was great. Great decoration, good food, but horrible service. It took a bit over 2 hours from start to finish eating lunch. It took 40 min for us to get our drinks and we had to ask numerous times where our food was. We were in process of walking out when the waitress begged us to stay and assured us the food was on its way. It was and we ate it, but not without speaking to the “manager” first. He said he would look into it and see what he could do. Then he just disappeared. So we had to ask where he was and he came back offering us free desert. I informed him we didn’t have time to wait for that so he gave us about ½ off our bill. We never found out what happened, but it was not a great time. I think they lost our order. I know it was a new restaurant, but this was over the top. We had just started or vacation so nothing would ruin it for us. I think I would try it again and count the first visit dumb luck. Loaded down with bags of souvenirs we headed over to Port Orleans to check in and meet up with my mom, her husband Mike, and friend Aaron from church.
So our party now is at 13 people. After some pool time and checking out the resort, we went over to the Boardwalk (8 of us crammed into the mini van for this short trip). There we meet up with out friends who came down with us and also my sister and her husband James. (Many of the people being mentioned also have blogs, but I will not link them. You can find them yourself if you want). So we have a party of 15 now. We ate dinner at the ESPN place and had wonderful food and service. After dinner we walked a lap around the Boardwalk. Just as we were ready to leave a juggler/comedian began his performance so we stayed to watch. Josiah and the other kids were sitting up front and was picked to “help” with one of the performances. Of course we decided to leave the camcorder at the hotel because nothing was going to happen. Anyway, they guy had him spin plates and we all had a good time.
OK that was only day one, so I will do cliff notes for the rest.
We went to MK on Friday, fun. Animal Kingdom on Saturday, also fun. Sunday worship with the brethren at Fortune road , ate at Beaches and Cream with the Elams (that would be a total of 20 people we now know on vacation) and enjoyed the kitchen sink. The kitchen sink was a huge mound of ice cream and every topping known to man.
On Sunday afternoon we changed our resort to the Animal Kingdom Lodge (thank you to the Lungstrums for the sweet hook up). That place is our favorite so far. On Monday we went over to Epcot, my favorite. And then on Tuesday the grandparents took the kids and the adults went to Universal Studios. Afterward we ate at the Hard Rock Café then headed back to the room for some much needed rest. Wednesday was a relax day. My mom, Mike, and Aaron caught their flight back to Milwaukee and my sister and James headed back to KY. But my Brother in law arrived on Monday night and sister in law, Tonya, came in on Tuesday night to enjoy the FL sun with us. Wednesday evening we went over to Bumby Rd. C of C for class and that was pretty much it for the day. Thursday we headed over to Hollywood Studios and back to MK on Friday.
Then we had to say goodbye to Orlando and hi to Tampa. I look at Tampa as our home away from home (Orlando a close second). It just feels right when we go back. We started off with a trip to the FC book store. The campus looks very different than when I was there. C dorm is empty which saddens me a bit, OK I’m over it. Anyway, as we were pulling into the parking lot I see someone who looks familiar. Sure enough it was one of my suitemates, Gabe Saffold. He happened to be on a trip as well and we happened to be in the same place at the same time. It was sure good catching up with him. I know we just saw each other at the reunion in Feb, but this was a great surprise. Later that night we went over to visit the Tolberts and their 3 kids. It was 8 years since we saw them last. On Sunday we worshiped at North Livingston where we know many of the members there. We had lunch with some of them (Crims, Mrs. Judy, Fannins) and went to rest back at the hotel. Then after evening serviced we went out for dinner with the Fannins for a good old time. I’m sure there are many others I would have loved to visit with, but time would not allow.
Then we came home yesterday where I mowed my lawn as it snowed a bit. Disgusting! If anyone has money lying around and some extra time too let me know. I would love to use it to buy a house in Tampa and spend the winters there.
Glad you guys had a good trip!! The kids and I were down there last week too. We rode down with Dean's parents on the 16th and flew home on the 25th. We had a good time too!
What a fun trip!! I would have to sleep for a week after that! We missed seeing you guys. But we'll be in your "hometown" for awhile so maybe next time!
Can you believe that we had to have the heat on down here in tampa? sounds like you had a great time! I wish we could get a hookup for that lodge that is our fav. we visit the lobby and grounds but have never had the means to stay there!
You know what irritates me so much. About a week or so ago my partner and I went to pick up a patient who was "sick". Her really problem was lack of ambition. The patient had already been to the ER but left because she had to wait too long. So she went home and called an ambulance. When we got there she "couldn't" get off her couch to open the door so she passed us a key through. She was however miraculously able to put her shoes on and walk to the truck. When questioning her (19 years old) she stated she was on disability for depression. No job, no car, overweight, off her meds, out of treatment. Now I ask myself why am I paying her way she is fully capable in my eyes of working even with depression. We have all been depressed a time or two does that mean we quit our jobs and get "government cheese"? No we pick ourselves up by our bootstraps and go on. Why should I pay someone's way who is med non-complaint and can't go to treatment because she doesn't have a car. Here are some solutions, get over yourself, do something with your life, walk, ride a bike, get a cab and get your free meds down at the local pharmacy. Obviously I am annoyed as was my partner.
